Scoring Job Descriptions

Fairway Laser Operator

You will be stationed just inside the ropes near the landing area of the players drive. You will have a moveable tripod with a "trigger type" laser. You will also have a pouch with a battery, data radio and voice radio with headset. You will have a "Palm Pilot" type computer device connected to the data radio and battery. The Palm Pilot will provide you with information to know whose ball you are "shooting" with the laser. You will be measuring every drive. On par 5 holes there will be 2 fairway lasers. There will be an instructional session the weekend prior to the tournament.

Greenside Laser Operator

You will be stationed on a platform (4 to 8 ft high near the green). You will use a "survey grade" laser to take multiple measurements per player on the green. You will have a "Palm Pilot" type computer device to record the ball positions and you will be provided a voice radio. This is the most technologically involved of the two lasers. There will be an instructional session the weekend prior to the tournament.

Scorekeeper

To be a first time Walking Scorekeeper at the John Deere Classic you MUST have been a laser operator at a previous tournament, work on Wednesday and attend a Scoring workshop. It is also necessary that you understand the rules of golf and can walk 18 holes in the sun (or rain!). You will keep statistics as well as the score for groups of 2-3 golfers. Walking Scorekeepers will keep statistics on a handheld "PDA" type computer device. You will wear a headset that is connected to a voice radio. There will be a mandatory instructional session prior to the tournament.

Scoring Pool

This group is invaluable. Depending on the skills required and your training, you must be willing to fill in as a Fairway Laser Operator, Greenside Laser Operator, Walking Scorekeeper or where needed.. Minimum age is 13.
