New Volunteers

The John Deere Classic, like all events on the PGA TOUR, cannot operate without volunteers. Over 1,400 people from our area, including those charities we support, annually donate their time and energies to the tournament.

Because of their dedication, the John Deere Classic has been able to donate over $19 Million to area charities. We're proud of our efforts, and grateful to people like you who want to help the tournament and the community.

Please take a moment to review the descriptions of volunteer positions below and select areas that interest you the most. While your first choice may not be available, we can always find a position for people who really want to help

Volunteers are required to purchase their own uniform at approximately $30 and are asked to work at least two full shifts for their area. If you meet those requirements, you will be given a volunteer badge good for admission to the tournament for the entire week.

Remember that the John Deere Classic is more than a golf tournament. It is a tradition. Become a part of that tradition!

Committee Descriptions

MARSHALS
Marshals, the largest group of volunteers, work on the course to assist the players. This includes: spotting balls on the fairway, watching for errant shots and providing gallery control to keep play proceeding smoothly. They also assist the spectators to have the optimal view of play and enjoyment of the competition. Marshals work full day shifts and are needed Tuesday through Sunday with the largest numbers needed Wednesday and Sunday. Some knowledge of golf is desirable, but not necessary. Walking is involved for some assignments.

SCORING
The second largest group of volunteers. Scorers perform many functions. Those who keep the official score must be able to walk with the golfers and have a fair knowledge of golf. Other jobs include standing at the greens and fairways using a walkie talkie and laser device. You must be able to walk to your assigned position. Scorers are only required on Wednesday through Sunday.

STANDARD BEARERS
Volunteers must be able to take a 5-mile "hike". This involves carrying a tall "stick" with 30" sections across the top weighing approximately 5 pounds. The job is to show the gallery who is in the group and what the team or individual scores are. No golf experience is necessary, however, it is helpful to have skills in golf etiquette. Commitment is firm. Must walk 3 rounds of golf during tournament week. This is about 5 hours per round. There will be a mandatory clinic to attend prior to tournament.

ADMISSIONS
Volunteers on this committee sell and exchange tickets at all admission gates. They are usually the first contact that our spectators have with the tournament. A pleasant personality and ability to make change are the only prerequisites. You will normally be transported to your assignment.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation works Friday before tournament week through Tuesday after tournament. A good driving record and outgoing personality are requirements of this committee, as our primary function is to escort the TOUR Pros and/or their families, shuttle the caddies and media. Shifts are available at both the golf course and the airport (where we greet incoming/departing Pros).

INFORMATION CENTER
There will be four locations throughout the course in high traffic areas to help the general public or anyone who needs directions or any questions. There are also "rovers" placed among the public to answer any questions. Volunteer's knowledge needs to be diversified; therefore, they are supplied with an information book for quick review. Duties have included unlimited phone service to the public (which is monitored) and distribution, refilling and disposal of the Pairings Sheets.

CART COMMITTEE
The primary job is the distribution and maintenance of carts. Volunteers also provide transportation for officials and the handicapped, as well as, the carts to power the PGA TOUR scoreboard. This committee staffs three shifts daily with volunteers.

UNIFORM
Responsible for inventory and distribution of the volunteer uniform shirts and hats/visors. Volunteer information packets are distributed as well. Also assist in taking shirt/jacket/hat/visor orders for committee and board members.

CREDENTIALS
Inventory and control all tickets and parking passes. Assemble and distribute credential packages prior to tournament. Reconcile daily admissions during tournament. Handle all ticket and parking pass sales during tournament week. Create all official picture badges prior to and during tournament week. Maintain "Will Call" location for all credential pick-up during tournament week.

MEDICAL
These volunteers provide and arrange for any medical services needed by those associated with the PGA TOUR. They also provide urgent care for anyone on course during tournament week. Volunteers are nurses, paramedics or EMT's who work under the direction of a physician. There is usually a need for volunteers who have current CPR and are a licensed RN, LPN, EMT-B, EMT-1 or EMT-P.

SPECIAL SERVICES
The primary focus is parking cars for handicapped people, golf pros and their families. Volunteers also provide shuttle services for the handicapped to and from the hospitality tents. As needed we do on-course surveys and any other needs that we may assist in.

SWITCHBOARD
The switchboard is a critical element for the tournament. Those volunteers are the voice of the tournament to all that call in. There are a few openings available for anyone who would like to work inside and learn to operate a modern telephone switching system.
